Profile: Alissa Quick, Librarian:

The Librarian, “who shall maintain the music library in good order, keep a file of music, and arrange for transportation of the music folders to and from rehearsals and concerts.”  Alissa brings to the Librarian’s position experience in organizing.  She has worked in libraries since grade school.  She told me “she enjoys sorting through the chaos of the collection.”

Since 1998, Alissa has played horn with the Bloomington Community Band.  Not always a horn player, she started as a woodwind player. Alissa moved here from Colorado upon the advice of her academic advisor at Fort Lewis College.  He was pursuing a doctorate in music performance and recommended Alissa continue her graduate studies at IU.

Before choosing the flute at age 9, Alissa took piano lessons.  She chose the flute because she had a half mile walk to her house from the bus.  After moving to Colorado, the band director gave her a horn to play as there were 30 flutists already.

Throughout her early years, Alissa took private lessons thus enabling her to perform in various ensembles.  At Fort Lewis College, she participated in the concert, jazz, and marching bands along with the brass choir.  She joined the San Juan Symphony, and the Tacet Tuba Quartet, a brass quartet.  After graduation, Alissa performed with the New England Youth Ensemble which took her overseas to the Middle East.

Currently, Alissa also performs with the Bloomington Brass Band, a brass quintet, and a trombone quintet.  Shortly after arriving here, she played for a while with the Bloomington Symphony.

Alissa is looking for 2 or 3 cabinets with drawers that can hold legal size paper.

Profile: Lloyd Orr, Chair:

A Chair of the Board of Directors “shall call and preside over Board meetings and general membership meetings and oversee the responsibilities of other Board members.”

Lloyd joined the Bloomington Community Band in 1979.  He returned to playing trombone after a 20 year hiatus.  His maxim is to “develop and maintain the retirement skills you want to use before retirement”; thus, Lloyd returned to trombone.  Lloyd retired from Indiana University’s Economic Department in 1998.

Lloyd  has performed with several types of bands: marching, concert and “big bands” from high school through college.  Besides playing with BCB, he is currently part of the “Hornbones” with Alissa, Gary, Greg and Bette Lucas.  They performed last year at the Lowe’s hot dog/Pepsi stand on Sunday afternoon.

Lloyd’s other hobbies are biking in the summer, skiing in the winter and maintaining a good physical condition.  He also has a Rolls Royce limo which he loans out for weddings, proms and other special events with a donation to his church.

Profile: Dick Hiatt, Secretary:

The Secretary “shall keep records of all meetings of the Band and Board and maintain other permanent records.”

Dick came to Bloomington from Indianapolis in 1963 as an IU student.  After receiving his masters in 1969, he left here for the area around Champaign-Urbana where he served in the Air Force for four years.  Returning to Bloomington and IU in 1973, he joined the re-activated community band during its first days.

Originally, Dick was involved in music through his high school years.  During his college years, there was little opportunity for performing with a group.  His first instrument was not the clarinet but the saxophone.  He picked up the clarinet as a second instrument while playing with the jazz band.  He has also had interest in playing the piano and guitar.  Dick dabbled with the folk guitar during his college years, and pursued playing the piano after returning to Bloomington.  Dick said, “Music both listening to many different kinds of music and playing on the amateur level is a major area of interest for me.”  Besides music, he enjoys spending time with his computer at home.
