“The Librarian will care for the music, index the available parts in an orderly manner, will distribute the music folders at all rehearsals and concerts, and will be responsible for the transportation of music to all concert sites.”

Joie is owner/manager of Howard’s Bookstore, an independent downtown business.  The business was started by her parents, Howard and Jane in the early 1970’s.  It was originally called, Little Professor; it became Howard’s Bookstore in 1972.  Joie and her husband came to Bloomington from Chicago so Joie could help her parents with the store since it was doing so well.  She has been in Bloomington for 30 years, and is now living in a rural area in an 110 year old cottage.  Besides managing a bookstore, Joie enjoys painting, drawing, knitting, beadwork, and gardening.

Joie does not remember exactly when she joined our group.  She first started by playing the flute, piccolo and some percussion.  Finding a Bb clarinet at an inexpensive price, she changed to the clarinet section and has been there ever since moving from third to first/solo clarinet.  Besides the clarinet, flute and piccolo, she plays the soprano saxophone.  Because of her ability to play the fiddle, Joie became a member of the Bloomington Symphony for three years playing violin and clarinet.  She told me it was a “learning experience.”

At present, Joie additionally plays with the Bloomington Brass band, a tenor horn which looks like a small baritone.  There is some controversy over the name for this instrument.  Some call it a tenor horn (British), althorn (U.S.), Waldhorn,  Eb alto saxhorn, and/or E-flat horn.  These horns are not used in symphonies; preference there is for the French horn.  They are primarily played in brass bands of which the Salvation Army is the best known.  To read more about tenor horns see:  www.angelfire.com/oh/EbAltoTenorFhorn/text.html

Article 2.

The Board is in the process of updating the constitution and by-laws.  One item under discussion is changing the election of officers from the spring to the fall with officers taking office on January 1.
