“The Business Manager shall handle all business that comes before the Band, making arrangements for concerts, trips, and purchases of equipment, and shall be responsible for the printing of handbooks, programs, and brochures, advertising matter, and other appropriate material.” (Constitution/by-laws in effect as of June 5, 2002)
The Business Manager “who shall make arrangements for concerts, trips, and purchases of equipment, and who may recommend the appointment of ad hoc committees as needed.” (Proposed revised duties)
Jan Johnson joined the band in 1998-- playing baritone. She also performs with the Bloomington Brass Band and with the Bedford-North Lawrence Summer Band.
Jan has lived in Bloomington since her retirement in 1995. She is originally from Illinois receiving a B.S. and M.S. in music education. She taught in Elgin, Illinois and Tacoma, Washington for a time before joining the Department of Defense Dependent School system. This program sent her to places outside the United States: Yokohama (Japan), Madrid (Spain) and Ramstein (Germany). Leaving music teaching behind, Jan enrolled at Michigan State for an educational administration degree. This led her back to Germany until her retirement, choosing Bloomington for its “Big Ten” atmosphere and its amenities, especially its sports and music activities.
Jan in her retirement, along with her musical commitments, is owner of “Sheltie Snuggle Service,” a service which brings shelties to organizations like the Bloomington Hospital. The “Sheltie Snuggle Service” is a fairly new concept referred to as pet therapy. Pet therapy or “animal assisted therapy” provides entertainment and uplifts the spirits of individuals along with other benefits. Generally, dogs are the common pet visitor; but, I have read of cats, parakeets and other wildlife being used. Besides owning her own business, Jan is a tax preparer.
