Profile: Gary Wiggins, Historian:
Gary is originally from Charlestown, Indiana. Charlestown is near Jeffersonville off of State Road 62. He moved to Bloomington approximately 40 years ago to attend Indiana University. Except for a short time in Urbana, Illinois, Gary has called Bloomington home. He became Head of the IU Chemistry Library in 1976, and was recently appointed Director of the Program in Chemical Informatics and Interim Director of the Bioinformatics Program.
Gary credited his band instructor, Paul Sawyer, with choosing the trombone for him in the 5th grade. There were several people in his formative (musical) years that influenced him besides his band director. One of those was Cecil “Corky” Richmond, with whom he formed a dixieland/dance band. The band played in the Wayne County area.
“Father of the Bloomington Community Band,” Tim announced at one of our rehearsals. Gary was instrumental in applying for the start-up grant and helping to formally organize the BCB the winter of 1978. Gary has served in several capacities through the years. Band manager and on the election committee are two that come to my mind.
Besides the BCB, Gary has performed with the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra “until I discovered that music for trombone can be written in clefs other than bass clef!” He also plays currently with the HornBones, formerly the Bloomington Bones. The HornBones was formed by a trombone player, Wilson Winner who played with the BCB some time ago. Any other spare time Gary has he spends it on his other leisure activity, collecting pewter.

His other interests include hiking, genealogy and woodworking. He also enjoys collecting old National Geographic magazines.
